The Trip

PhotoVietnam is a country of immense beauty and geographical diversity.

The country is roughly divided into three main areas:

  • Bac Po (north), Trung Bo (centre) and Nam Bo (south).

The main feature of North Vietnam is its mountains and forests which line the vast Red River Delta.

The north is also home to the Gulf of Tonkin and a maze of islands in the bay. Central Vietnam is made up of agricultural plains wedged between the Truong Son Mountains and the South China Sea, creating breathtaking mountain passes overlooking ocean vistas. The Mekong Delta dominates the south of the country.

Vietnam has been the site of battles and invasions for more than 2000 years.

The influences of invaders (or modern day 'liberators') have left the country with a unique cultural identity and a complex and fascinating history. This history has given Vietnam a diverse population made up of different ethnic groups. Each bring a unique flavour to the sites, sounds and culinary delights of the country.

While Vietnam has opened its doors to tourism since the 1990s, it remains true to its cultural origins and has avoided becoming a laid-back tourism paradise like its neighbour, Thailand. Not surprisingly, this makes Vietnam an especially attractive destination for those who prefer to experience the cultural diversity and challenges of a country.

Why World Expeditions?

World Expeditions is one of the world’s original adventure travel companies, starting in 1975, and was the first to pioneer cycle touring through Vietnam back in 1992. Over time they have evolved into one of the leading authorities in the field of adventure travel. The company is passionate about off the beaten track experiences, providing travelers with the thrill of coming face-to-face with untouched cultures, as well as wilderness regions of great natural beauty.

Vietnam’s environment is extremely fragile. The rapidly increasing population puts immeasurable pressure on the country's environment and resources and it is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions’ motto has always been that "we take only photographs and leave only footprints".

In September 2001, World Expeditions was the recipient of the Australian National Travel Industry's Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook.

Riding a mountain bike along the byways of Vietnam is without doubt the most rewarding way to experience this rich and varied destination.

Travelling by the same mode as the local people enables you to interact and gain a mutual respect that you typically wouldn’t experience with alternative means of travel.

Cycling through the towns and countryside enables you to experience the culture, pace and day-to-day life experiences of this country in all its authentic, natural beauty and hospitality.

Travelling at a slower pace than most coach tours, you are better able to absorb the long and complex history of the country, as well as enjoy the beautiful scenery of the coast, plains and highlands that have drawn so many travellers to this part of the world.

Integral to the experience is the warmth and hospitality of the many Vietnamese people you’ll meet during the trip. Along our route you will be in contact with the real Vietnam - an experience you will never forget.
