Possible side effects of medication

Parkinson’s is a complex illness that in some instances may include behavioral or psychological symptoms as well as affecting movement.  These feelings are related to the condition and may be exacerbated in some instances by the medications used to manage Parkinson’s.   The Client Services Team at Parkinson’s Victoria is aware of the challenges that these symptoms can cause and additional information on them may be found at the following links.  Click here for an article by Parkinson's Specialist Nurse Victor McConvey on non-motor symptomsA detailed article from the U.K. Parkinson's Disease Society on impulse control disorders and the possible link with dopamine agonists can be found here.   Further information on gambling and Parkinson's is available by clicking here

New report shows need for government funding for people living with Parkinson's

A report, commissioned by Parkinson's Victoria, has been completed by eminent disability consultants Dr Chris Fyffe and Jeffrey McCubbery. The report focuses on the significant population of people with Parkinson's who are of working age, and the lack of government funded service planning and coordination.  People in this age group are not recognised by government, are under represented in service access, and are subsequently marginalised.  Click here for the full report

Parkinson's can affect  adults of any age

There is a misconception that Parkinson's is only a condition for the elderly.  This is not the case.  Of the 25 people diagnosed every day with Parkinson's in Australia, five each day, or over 1,800 per year, will be of working age.  Nerissa Mapes was diagnosed at 28.  Click here to read her story featured in the December edition of Woman's Day.  Use the "zoom" function to enlarge the article.
